Summer term 2012 - Making connections
Our topic this half-term is 'Making Connections'
One theme we will is explore in 'Making Connections' is Electricity.
As usual the children have raised lots of interesting questions for us to answer, such as:
- How is electricity made?
- How does electricity get to our homes?
- How has electricity changed our lives?
To find out how electricity is made and how it gets to our homes click HERE
You will also learn about how dangerous electricity is.
So STAY SAFE and NEVER PLAY WITH ELECTRICITY!
This clip is all about how electricty travels around London - especially important to us because we are London Base.

Enterprise week.
This has been such an exciting week at school!
Each class has been designing and making a product to sell to raise money for Sport Relief to help change the lives of disadvantaged children at home and abroad.

In London Base we thought of the two important celebrations going on in London this year.
Firstly there is the queen’s diamond jubilee and then later we will be hosting the 2012 Olympic games.
We decided to make Diamond Jubilee cup cakes and an Olympic Punch!
First we learned about fair trade and the many roles played in creating a product and bringing it to market.

Here are some of our initial designs.
Once we decided on our design we started production!
We conducted some market research by asking each class what they would be prepared to pay for our items.
Then we started advertising.
Our sales team prepared and delivered a very persuasive pitch to everyone.
Then the retail team took over!
We had to be very quick with our maths calculations!
We raised lots of money for Sport Relief!

Science. Learning about plants.
This half term our topic work is all about plants and gardens. We are making a garden centre and plant shop in our classroom. We have made a research area in our book corner so we can go and find answers to our own questions e.g. What can plants be used for? What do plants need to grow? How are new plants made? Why are plants so different? Why are they different colours?
We have been learning about how plants make new plants. To learn more look at these videos!

Firefighters visit
Today we had a visit from Jon Sweet - the Education officer from Dorset Fire and Rescue service.
He explained how we must make sure our homes have smoke alarms and we have an exit plan in the event of a fire.
We learnt the sequence of events if there is a fire in our home.
**** NEVER PLAY WITH MATCHES OR LIGHTERS.****
He explained how we must make sure our homes have smoke alarms and we have an exit plan in the event of a fire.
We learnt the sequence of events if there is a fire in our home.
- Smoke alarm goes off.
- Shout "FIRE"
- Get out, stay out...Don't go back for your toys!
- Phone 999, say your address and what has happened.
If a fire reaches you you must STOP, DROP and ROLL!
We learnt how firefighters prepare themselves to fight fires safely and we had a go at getting the uniforms on in less than 1 minute.
Then the fire engine arrived!
Thank you firefighters for visiting us and for all the good work you do!
