Making the right connections
As part of our Science topic we learnt about electricity, using circuits, batteries, switches and light bulbs. To demonstrate some of the circuits we built them into models that lit up in various ways. The results are amazing!!!

Network Olympic Festival

Being switched on!!
Today we learnt all about using switches in electric circuits, what materials act as conductors of electricity and what materials act as insulators.
We used home-made switches with paper clips, screws, safety pins and aluminium foil. We also tested to see if rubber, coins, paper, wood, plastic and keys would conduct or insulate.
This switch was made using a folded peice of card, covered top and bottom, with aluminium foil!
This switch was made using safety pins to complete the circuit across two screws that the crocodile clips were attached to. This also worked as a conductor. We tried replacing the safety pin with rubber, wood, paper or plastic and the bulb did not light up. They were insulators.
Our results were:
Conductors Insulators
Coins Rubber
Keys Wood
Safety pins Plastic
Paper

Seeing the light!!!
This week we will be trying out different ways of using circuits with batteries, bulbs and wires. We will discover how to make a bulb light up when correctly connected to a battery using wires.

Summer term 2012 - Making connections
Our topic this half-term is 'Making Connections'
One theme we will is explore in 'Making Connections' is Electricity.
As usual the children have raised lots of interesting questions for us to answer, such as:
- How is electricity made?
- How does electricity get to our homes?
- How has electricity changed our lives?
